Summer holiday 2003
le Cap D´Agde − France
Friday, 11th July
We get up late today, 09:30 hr.. At the park´s supermarket I get some fresh French bread and croissants! Again yeah!, Now stop bothering me, I am eating!
The whole morning I am doing nothing, nothing and a lot more of nothing. Such a wonderful empty life, but it only lasts till about 13:00 hr..
At this time I begin to feel like doing something, which feels quite disturbing really. So I decide to go to the beach and continue doing nothing at all over there while getting a tan. My son Maurits decides to come along with me because he wants to search for some more shells and hermit crabs, which is fine to me. So, the both of us set out for the "la Roquille" beach.
Arived at the beach we quickly find a nice spot not to far away from the water where I set up the sunshade. This becomes a landmark for him, so he will be able to find me again in the large crowd that populates the beach. Again the temperature must be like 35° or even 40°. At least, that´s what it feels like.
The hot sand really burns underneath my feet. I unfold my towel on the ground, apply the necessary grease, take a sip of water and stretch out on the towel in the burning sun. I here my son say, "I see you later dad", and I raise my head to see him walk into the water knee deep, starting to scrutinise the sea floor for shells, disappearing into the mass of people populating the waterline. I myself stick to applying sun block, taking sips of water and lie motionless while being cooked by the sun.
I manage to keep this up until about 16:00 hr., at which point I decide that it has been enough for today. I fish my son out of the surf, and together we return to the park. Before dinner is served, I still have time for a swim in the pool. It will refresh me, and cool me down a bit.
This evening there are only the three of us for dinner. The boys went out this morning and bought tickets for tonight´s barbeque. Yes, the animation team, you´re absolutely right! Since we are bit curious ourselves as to what is on the menu, we go with them to have a quick look.
There are two large tables lined up covered with trays that contain hamburgers and other snacks, bread and various other things. Standing in the corner is a 3 feet wide barbeque with smoke rising over it. They´re all set to go by the looks of it!
Lots of other children varying in age have arrived by now, and all of them are given a glass of lemonade. Then the captain of the animation team takes position behind the grill, and things are on the move.
We leave them to it and go back to the apartment to have dinner of our own. We will go back to pick them up again at the end of the tropical pool feast, which starts after the barbeque dinner.
